“Georg Trakl’s poems have astonished generations of readers with their fierce sadnesses, deceptive complexity, and subtle elegance. Tapscott’s translations are a marvel, capturing in English the vitality of Trakl’s silences; his lean, succinct poetic lines; his grim wit; and his quest for the ineffable in the face of often harrowing circumstances.”—Kevin Prufer

From the Book:

A Winter Evening (second version)

As the snow falls on the window,
the evening-bell rings in the distance.
The table is set, ready for many,
and the house is well-provisioned.

Sometimes a traveler comes up
the dark paths, to the door.
The tree of magnanimity blooms golden,
out of the earth’s fresh sap.

Traveler, step gently within;
suffering has turned the lintel to stone.
There, glowing pure and bright
on the table: bread and wine.
