The Pleasure Principle
Jon Loomis

FIELD Poetry Series

Oberlin
2001 • 71 pp. 6 x 9"
Poetry - American

$14.95 Paperback, 978-0-932440-90-7

Jon Loomis's new collection of poems visits big subjects by way of the commonplace. While The Pleasure Principle is full of surprises, both narrative and metaphoric, it is more than anything a humane and thoughtful exploration of the human condition: passion, mortality, cross-dressing, time, tourism, art, the shifty nature of reality, and, always considered in Loomis's work, the unknowable absolute.

From the Book:

Happiness

Night. Crickets
winding their watches.
Summer burning out

at last, the lawn scorched,
the big catalpa slowly
stripping down to scabs.

A spider rappels
from the ceiling fan.
A chartreuse tree-frog’s

glued to the screen,
haloed in moths.
The house settles

an eighth of an inch—
deep in their burrows
the fire ants rejoice.
