"For years researchers have been telling us that too much screen time has negative consequences for kids and adults alike. In fact, for a lot of folks, the natural reaction to yet another study demonstrating the baneful impact of television is an exasperated "Duh?!?" Fortunately, what Barbara Brock as done in Living Outside the Box is something much more novel. Her new book goes "outside the box" by focusing not on what's wrong with too much TV time but on what's right about limiting or eliminating the tube from our lives. Her interviews, surveys, and studies, involving more than a thousand participants, have given her a wealth of information—rich, revealing, and informative—about who's not watching TV and why.

As it turns out, screen-free folks look, sound, and act much like the rest of us, with one vital exception. They have a lot more time to engage in the activities they most value, whether it's spending time with family, reading, playing instruments, exercising, or any of the many other pursuits that our TV habits often displace.
Living Outside the Box amply, and entertainingly demonstrates "through the tales of those who live with little or not TV" why this is so. As a result, it's a welcome addition to the field. Bravo!"—Frank Vespe, former executive director, TV-Turnoff Network

"Barbara Brock's Living Outside the Box is the most ambitious study ever undertaken on the experiences of people who have stopped watching television. If you're thinking about cutting back on your TV habit or even eliminating television from your family's life, this is the book for you. No other work on the subject gives you the tools you'll need and is as likely to succeed in motivating you to live life 'outside the box.'"—Robert Kubey, director, Center for Media Studies, Rutgers University

A professor of recreation management at Eastern Washington University for the past twenty years, BARBARA BROCK is widely known for her innovative research in TV-free lifestyles. Articles about her work have appeared in Time magazine and in numerous other publications, including Parenting, Woman's Day, Family Circle, and Good Housekeeping. Perhaps ironically, she has also appeared on the Today Show, in an interview with Katie Couric. For over two decades now, she and her husband, together with their two children and a gaggle of pets, have lived very contentedly without television.
