Bilingual Spanish-English ed.

"There are as many intricate and intelligent combinations of moods as there are fulcrums in "Points of Balance / Puntos de Apoyo," and only a mind of such range and reach like Pablo Medina could manage it. This book is nothing short of linguistic mastery."El Paso Times

Cuban-born New York poet Pablo Medina's bilingual fulcros are six-line poems that, as he writes, “combine the dialectic of the sonnet with the imagistic power of the haiku… shaping language and silence into a point of balance floating in the ocean of time.” These short poems, which are not translations of each other, draw us into an intellectual condition: Spanish and English, visual and theoretical, intimate and abstract, where “the thrush sings in the know-it-all woods.”

Reviews / Endorsements

“The pure pleasure of reading Pablo Medina's poetry is a measure of its lyric power, its spare and elegant language, the hairpin turn of its metaphors, the emotional ambience of its landscapes, its mating of sexual exuberance and historical melancholy.” —Eleanor Wilner

From the Book:

Como lo devora todo el sol!
Y se esparce (agua negra) el mal sabor
de un paraiso (a tientas) derrumbado.
En la sombra de un portal
hay un pilar de sal.
En su vientre el mar, el infinito mar.
from "Vista De La Habana"

PABLO MEDINA is the author of many works of poetry and prose, most recently Puntos de apoyo (poems in Spanish) and The Return of Felix Nogara (a novel), which The New York Times called “delicious, astute, and darkly funny.” He teaches in the Writing Concentration at Eugene Lang College of New School University.
