“In Rangi McNeil’s poems the person is first, with a rightness that catches my breath. What surprise, what derision, what intense and ungratifiable desire—each poem is well minded, finished off, only a gasp away. Country occasions, urban jump cuts, a speaker alert and unfazed in his angelic recording: solo and social, he lives in our town.”—Marie Ponsot

From the Book:

The Safety of Objects

Yesterday I cut the legs off the red
sock puppet I made for Mother's Day 1988

& stuffed those limbs
into the front pouch of my black bikini briefs.

It was cold out.
I wanted to make a good impression.

RANGI MCNEIL was born and raised in rural North Carolina. He received a B.A. in History from Rice University in 1998. He is currently an MFA candidate at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
