“Edith Milton is one of my very favorite writers and Judith Oksner is one of my very favorite artists. Just add dogs and you have perfection.”—Sy Montgomery, former swineherd

Barking tells the tale of Emily and her sister Charlotte, two King Charles Cavalier Spaniels who live a happy, barking life in New York City, until the day everything comes crashing down—literally—all around them.

Reviews / Endorsements

“Children and dog lovers alike, whatever their age, will love Charlotte, the King Charles Spaniel whose ancestors “sat in the laps of kings.” She gets life wrong and gets life right—and thanks to the wit and charm of author Edith Milton, even Charlotte's “jeanetic” defect—barking— becomes delightful. How does she do it?”—Mimi Schwartz, author of Thoughts from a Queen-Sized Bed and Good Neighbors, Bad Times: Echoes of My Father's German Village

Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, EDITH MILTON is the author of The Tiger in the Attic: Memories of the Kindertransport and Growing Up English. Her writing has appeared in, among other places, the New York Times Book Review, New Republic, and the Boston Globe. She lives in California and New Hampshire. Painter JUDITH OKSNER studied liberal and fine arts in college and in graduate school and taught art for many years. Over time she converted from a full-time teacher to a full-time painter. She illustrated Snowball the Dancing Cockatoo by Sy Montgomery, also from Bauhan Publishing.
