HENRY CARLILE was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He attended the University of Washington, and since 1967 has taught at Portland State University. During 1978-80 he was a visiting lecturer in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His first book, The Rough-Hewn Table, won the Devins Award in 1971. He is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, Crazyhorse magazine’s 1988 Poetry Award, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ingram Merrill Foundation. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
