"Kurt Rheinheimer's Little Criminals is sure to rank as one of the finest short story collections of this year. His stories are not routine slices of familiar life—they are capricious re-imaginings of diverse American places and people with all the abundant surprises and revelations we expect from a major artist. This is writing that credits the intelligence of the reader; that has something new and provocative to say about social class and existential conditions; and does so with crisp dialogue and thematic complexity. They are memorable fictive worlds that every reader will want to keep close by."—Laurence Goldstein, Editor of Michigan Quarterly Review

"It is both satisfying and sobering to read Kurt Rheinheimer's deliberate, charitable stories in Little Criminals. Before a backdrop of popular music, baseball, and the hive-like drone of small communities, his protagonists lead lives of quiet desperation as they struggle with their jobs, mates, homes, and fading prospects. These scrupulously-observed characters summon the courage to face their predicaments "in the very middle of the map of the country," and we feel the tremor of kinship and pray that they make it. "—R.T. Smith, Editor of Shenandoah Review

"Kurt Rheinheimer has the excellent writer's most necessary talent—the gift of acceptance. His characters are not exceptional in their situations or in their attitudes toward the world or toward themselves. They are extraordinary because they are unexceptional, so wonderfully human that their debris-laden landscapes fit them perfectly without defining them in any reductive way. Little Criminals is a gallery of the bemused, befuddled, and often bewitched Americans whom too many of us see without really seeing, know without truly knowing."—Fred Chappell, Poet Laureate of North Carolina

KURT RHEINHEIMER did graduate work in English at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. His stories have appeared in numerous journals, including Michigan Quarterly Review, Shenandoah, Glimmer Train, The South Carolina Review, and Quarterly West. He lives in Roanoke, Virginia, where he is editor for a regional magazine.
