Trans. from the German

Krolow’s more than twenty volumes of verse, each with a recognizable face of its own, reflect the development of German poetry since the Second World War as no other single literary ouevre does. From the Book:

What I exchange for music
is an uncertain feeling.
What would you do?
Just listen and amuse yourself,
like around or think about Soul?
There’s so much we can’t turn up,
it went through a sieve, disappeared
in the earth or the air.
What does that have to do with Erik Satie or
Messiaen’s lascivious organs?
I can’t get rid of this feeling.
It spoils the nice weather we’re having outdoors —
a slowly falling rain.
Is it always like this, you listen
too long and can’t get rid of the rain
that drenches our rational life.
My eyes fill with water
that takes my sight away.
