“The speaker in Sean Garritty’s fine first book of poems, Lie Nearest Truth, is—like Baudelaire’s flaneur—a Prince of Incognito. By turns louche and loving, tender and wry, he wanders a landscape of ‘sexualized light,’ ‘the humdrum spectacular.’ His coolly observant eye views through ‘windows of espial,’ ‘displaced mirrors’ a haunting and haunted world of remembered feelings—the bleak morning after the wild night before. In line after line this extraordinary young poet savors ‘the sticky geometry’ of memory’s honeycomb, the bittersweet aftertaste of the language of loss & desire.”L. S. Asekoff

From the Book:

The Papers are signed. Hold me,
just not to anything
like daytime sun to the evening light,

or the legalese of holding another’s hand.
I found my certainty
was written in invisible inks

the sort of absence-presence stuff
a philosophy student might extol,
but which pulls my wheel hand dangerously left.

Now I wait for the sun’s bleaching warmth
as beyond white the snow will melt
nearest lies to be purged.
