The One Fifteen to Penn Station
Kevin Carey

New Voices

2012 • 72 pp. 6 x 9 1/4"

$16.00 Paperback, 978-1-933880-29-7

Family, friendships, the fear of uncertainty and the regret and damage from the choices we make

Poetry that takes us from an urban beachfront in the shadow of the Boston skyline to the halls of a private prep school, from the corner drugstore to the playground basketball court.

“Carey’s universe may be set in blue-collar New England, but out of that backdrop, we find a man very much like ourselves trying to hold on to what everyone loses eventually—his children as they grow up, his parents, long-time friends, perhaps, most important of all, his sense of where he thought he was going to be when he was young and what life is for him now.”– Maria Mazziotti Gillan – from the Foreword

From the Book:

Red Sneakers

you stole my red sneakers and boxed my ears
in English class
and never said a word,
not even years later
when I saw you drinking rum by a pool table,
or years after that
in line for takeout food on the beach
one hot July night.
You looked tired and confused and sick
and I remember thinking I’d outlasted you
and our eyes met and you nodded your head
as if I were a traffic cop,
a paper boy,
a bartender,
someone put in place to get you by.
