An insider’s view to running the Boston Marathon; read what it really takes to train, persevere, and complete the oldest and most popular of all marathons

Conquering the Beast takes the reader to the heart of the Boston Marathon experience and defines what it means to both runners and the community. Read about the average runners’ experiences and anecdotes, get helpful strategies and tips such as the “Ten Commandments of Boston,” how to make your own energy drink, and what to eat the night before and day of the race, and learn about the unique and colorful history of this world-renowned competition.

This book is a wonderful and fast-paced read for runners and those interested in the training and endurance required to run the Boston Marathon. Anyone with an interest in the spirit and excitement of this historic race will enjoy the author’s first-hand accounts and descriptions of the special moments experienced by the average or “back-of-the-pack” marathon runner.

NICHOLAS SAN MARTINO has run and completed thirty Boston Marathons, twenty-six of those consecutively. He also competed in the Ironman Triathlon in 1983. Nick is a physical therapist in Springfield, VT, a former track coach in Milford, NH, and a graduate of UVM. He is a father of five and has one grandchild, and continues to run at age 58.
