"...Poetrymaking is gathering words to create a place we can understand; and Guerra’s inescapable humor and relevant despair somehow connects us to everything behind our control, and we love that he’s in charge of that. ..."—Grace Cavalieri, Washington Independent Review of Books

A debut collection of poems about everyday loneliness, set to music

When Hollywood Comes to You explores the conflict between the story we tell ourselves about our life and the actual, everyday stuff that makes up our life, which, when looked at closely, is often surprising in its oddness, silliness, and sometimes mercy. The poems evoke the loneliness and anxiety of not living up to our life story as well as the transcendent feeling when these two lives align.

Reviews / Endorsements

“…Guerra has the poetry car revved up and ready to go…”—Barbara Hamby

“…Guerra fashions a distinctly original poetry, in which childlike wonder and adult courage are fused together by unbridled, swift language of an almost atomic intensity....”—D.A. Powell

From the Book:

And Why Not Just Kamikaze

Some of us
live in parking lots, bleary
and incoherent from
meth, awake only
in a remembered middle
school, painting houses when
we're sober. Paging
Vincent Guerra. Vincent Guerra
to the principal's office. Remember
when you laid the wreath
at Arlington? Remember when we
slept side by side in sleeping
bags on my bedroom floor?
is how God
blesses us, a good
heart. All else
is Caesar's.

VINCENT GUERRA was born and raised in Grass Valley, California. He received his MFA from Washington University in St. Louis and his PhD from Florida State University. He lives in Boston.
