UPNE and Open Access

Open Access logoUniversity Press of New England (UPNE) and its member presses, Dartmouth College Press and Brandeis University Press, are engaged in several initiatives to support worldwide Open Access to important scholarship in digital form.

Dartmouth College Press and the Dartmouth Library work together to ensure that Open Access copies of the Press’s backlist titles are made available online to readers, generally two to three years after a title is first released. To view a set of Open Access ebooks that Dartmouth College Press and the Library have produced in collaboration, please visit Dartmouth Digital Publishing.

Brandeis University Press and the Brandeis Library are also committed to making much of their scholarship available in Open Access digital editions just a few years after original publication. Their Open Access titles can be found in the Brandeis Institutional Repository.

Dartmouth and Brandeis feel strongly that making their academic titles available online at no charge to readers globally exposes them to a wider audience and increases their potential scholarly impact.

UPNE also participated in the Round 2 Open Access collection offered by Knowledge Unlatched. This model involved almost 300 libraries in 24 countries sharing a single title fee in return for a new scholarly book being made available on a Creative Commons license via OAPEN and HathiTrust as a fully downloadable PDF. The titles UPNE contributed to Round 2 are: Girls of Liberty: The Struggle for Suffrage in Mandatory Palestine (Brandeis University Press) and World Beats: Beat Generation Writing and the Worlding of U.S. Literature (Dartmouth College Press).
